Meto 671 Air/sea interaction and tropical meteorology

(3 credits). Prerequisite: MATH 246 or equivalent and some meteorology. Observations and theories of the seasonal changes in the atmosphere and ocean. Equations of motion and theories of wind-driven circulation and thermally driven atmospheric circulation. Equatorial waves and mixed layers. Coupled instabilities of the atmosphere and ocean.   El Nino/Southern Oscillation. Monsoons. Madden-Julian Oscillations and intraseasonal variability.  North Atlantic Oscillation and the link to midlatitude climate.   Grade will be based on a term project and assignments.
