UMD AOSC Seminar

A Critical Look at the Science of Climate

Professor Ross Salawitch

University of Maryland
Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science
Department of Chemistry
Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center

I’ll take a critical look at the science of climate change, beginning with a screening of an ~8 minute video presentation by John Coleman, TV meteorologist and founder of The Weather Channel, who dismisses the possibility that anthropogenic emissions can affect global climate:

Together we’ll deconstruct this video, in an attempt to separate fact from fiction and also to gain an understanding of why public communication of the Science of Climate Change is such a challenge. I’ll touch upon issues related to the recent “Climategate” controversy as well as the strengths and weaknesses of global climate models. Folks are encouraged to view the video prior to the seminar (sorry about the attendant advertising). If you are unable to view, try to arrive on time, since much of the presentation will leverage off the contents of the video.
