IntroductionObservational capabilities have been developed at a sub- Sahel site in Africa to obtain information on environmental parameters. The site is located in a climatically important region, the desert transition zone between the Sahara and the savanna of upper Nigeria. This region is influenced by the dusty Harmattan wind which persists for long periods of time, and is characterized by steady dusty conditions with high aerosol loading, which significantly affect the interpretation of satellite observations.
